The GoodDog is an advanced life-saving connected device designed to seamlessly attach
to a dog’s existing collar while remaining lightweight, compact and comfortable for
everyday use. The system was created to provide pet owners with an intelligent emergency
communication and positioning platform capable of assisting during critical situations
where rapid response and reliable connectivity are essential.
The device pairs effortlessly with a smartphone using Bluetooth Low Energy while leveraging LTE-M cellular communication to transmit emergency alerts, positioning data and critical notifications in real time. Future-ready by design, the platform is also architected to support satellite communication technologies, enabling reliable operation even beyond traditional terrestrial network coverage.
NEUVATEK led the electronic hardware design and embedded firmware development for the entire platform, including both the cellular modem subsystem and Bluetooth MCU architecture, low-power optimization, wireless communication and full integration with the Nordic Semiconductor nRF Cloud ecosystem. The project combines advanced embedded electronics, secure cloud connectivity, intelligent power management and ultra-miniaturized product integration into an extremely compact form factor.
The GoodDog is built around Nordic Semiconductor technologies, integrating the nRF9151 LTE/GNSS modem for LTE-M connectivity and positioning services, the nRF54L15 Bluetooth MCU for secure short-range communication, and the nPM1300 PMIC for advanced battery charging, fuel gauging and power management. The system also integrates GNSS positioning capabilities including GPS, Assisted-GPS and cell-based positioning to enhance tracking performance and responsiveness.
Despite its extremely small dimensions of approximately 50 × 30 mm and a total weight of only 4.8 grams, the device is implemented on an advanced 8-layer PCB stack-up utilizing highly miniaturized components. This architecture enables the integration of LTE-M communication, Bluetooth connectivity, GNSS positioning, audio capture, RGB LED feedback, onboard flash storage and advanced power regulation within a highly constrained mechanical footprint.
The product incorporates onboard audio functionality through a digital MEMS microphone and integrated piezo speaker system, enabling emergency audio message capture and playback. Large onboard flash memory supports firmware-over-the-air updates, secure data storage and compressed audio recording functionality. A dedicated GNSS front-end amplifier and a custom Kyocera AVX combo antenna were carefully integrated to maximize LTE, GNSS and Bluetooth performance despite the compact enclosure dimensions.
The embedded firmware architecture coordinates low-power operation, LTE communication, Bluetooth connectivity, cloud synchronization, emergency alert handling, GNSS positioning, secure provisioning and firmware updates through robust state-machine architectures. Secure MQTT over TLS communication with nRF Cloud enables scalable device-to-cloud connectivity, remote device management and reliable backend integration.
Security was implemented as a foundational design layer across the platform. Credentials, certificates and secure keys are protected using the hardware root-of-trust capabilities of the modem architecture, enabling encrypted TLS communication, secure boot validation, authenticated firmware execution and resilient cloud connectivity aligned with modern IoT cybersecurity practices.
The GoodDog ecosystem was developed through a collaborative Austin, Texas innovation network. NEUVATEK handled the electronic and firmware engineering, Fahrenheit Design led the industrial design, Clandestine managed the mechanical engineering and enclosure development, while the backend infrastructure and mobile applications were developed by Startuplandia.io, resulting in a fully integrated end-to-end connected product ecosystem.
The final product delivers a highly optimized combination of compact industrial design, low-power embedded electronics, secure wireless communication and cloud connectivity, creating a next-generation pet safety platform designed to provide peace of mind and reliable emergency assistance for dog owners in real-world environments.
